Every weekend we plan outings for the boarding students. Trying to come up with something they haven't done is always a bit challenging. I was told by our headmaster that one student said, "I don't want to wash another elephant!" Well, I haven't washed one yet and would like to mark that off my bucket list.
One of our Resident Advisers suggested we take the students to Sticky Falls. Why not!
This is Sticky Falls ... THE best outing we've done thus far. Painting the ceramic elephants was nice but this was better. The reason they call it Sticky Falls is because there are minerals in the water that prevent the growth of algae thus there is not slime on the rocks. The rocks are limestone and are porous. The falls are very steep but because they aren't slick it makes for the best climbing. The water was crisp and clear and so refreshing. It happened to be in the mid 90's and with 100% humidity.
Here are a few pics of our excursion. Not all the kids participated but those who did truly enjoyed the experience.
I was afraid I'd slip even though I knew the rocks weren't slippery.
The water was so cool and nice. I just sat there for about 15 minutes enjoying it. Our ride on the bus took about an hour which always makes me a bit queasy.
These three girls are Prim (the artist), Vern, and Tina (the trouble maker). They were the only three who went into the water. The others went to the shops and ate snacks.
This is Robert. He was so afraid he would fall that he went most of the way on his rear end. He is one of the nicest young men we have here.
Cattle Barn Buffet
The same RA that suggested the waterfall, also suggested going to a buffet. I was game, I don't know much about places to eat to take the kids so this was fine with me. The bus dropped us off by an alley and we had to walk down this dirt road. When we turned the corner there it was. We walked inside and my mouth dropped. It looked like an old dirty cattle barn. The difference being there were no cows just rows and rows of picnic type tables with BBQ's in the middle of the table. You go to this long feeding trough and there are containers of raw meat, fish parts and pieces, balls of meat .... lots of balls .... tentacles floating in a watery liquid.
On another table there was a variety of cooked items. The only thing I recognized was chicken wings. The next long table had gelatinous squares in different colors. Not sure what it was. I think I walked around for 15 minutes just gawking at all the food. What's interesting are the contraptions they rig above the raw meat. It looks like a fan but instead of paddles it has these long strings with a cut up bag that spin around above the meat to keep the flies away. Below is a link to a youtube video of what I'm trying to describe.

Rows and rows of tables. It was so hot in there too. From left to right around the table, Sonia, Sheng Li, Rollie (RA), Tony, Steven, and Nina. All of the students pictured here are Chinese.
This group of young men are my favorite. They are polite, well mannered, and a pleasure to be around.
Poor Michy was so hot. He just stuck the napkins to his face to catch the sweat.
A great memory all around. I could have stayed at the falls forever. The buffet was an experience I won't soon forget and the kids make everything enjoyable.

This is what the BBQ looks like. Everyone get a piece of fat, the white square in the middle, to coat the BBQ with oil. It helps the meat not to stick. There is water around it like a moat that the fat drops down into. This is where you boil/cook the vegetables.
